GASP Motor Project (GASP) engages vulnerable young people across Surrey through vocational training in motor mechanics and engineering.
The charity supports disadvantaged and marginalised children and young people (predominantly aged 14-16), including those referred from the youth justice system, an increasing number of pupils excluded from mainstream education or who are ‘school refusers’ and a high percentage with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
Following a bespoke curriculum, GASP delivers practical training leading to recognised qualifications. Offering a safe learning space, with a maximum group size of six youngsters to two tutors, learning can be adapted for each individual. The opportunity to gain skills and qualifications in motor mechanics can be lifechanging for disengaged young people, who begin to see themselves in a different light, as ‘achievers with potential’ rather than feeling discarded and demotivated – and then to move forwards towards adulthood and employment, with greater confidence.
The 2025 WWMT grant of £44,185 over 3 years will support 6 children from Therfield School, Leatherhead to have weekly mechanic sessions across 3 school terms.
