The Children’s Book Project is a lean, grassroots, volunteer-powered charity that understands the enormous power that reading has in shaping children’s lives. We have an ambition to eradicate book poverty and believe that, regardless of their circumstances, every child deserves access to inspiring reading material, expanding their perspective on the world and helping them to fulfil their potential.

We collect new and lightly used books from families and publishers and gift them onwards to children growing up in poverty, often with very few or none of their own. Every good quality book gifted to us by a family or publisher finds a new home, enabling it to be re-loved, not pulped and immediately increases its lifetime value.

Each year we work with hundreds of targeted settings, including schools, prisons, food banks, community groups and women’s groups to run free, inspirational and memorable book gifting events and to date we have gifted over 1.4 million books.

Through our work, many thousands of children and their families are able to enjoy the transformational benefits of books, reading and in turn literacy. By expanding opportunities for book ownership, we support children’s social and emotional development and engagement with reading for pleasure, furthering social mobility and creating social value in the communities we support.

WWMT have awarded a £10,000 pa grant for 3 years.  This is core funding that will enable The Children’s Project to expand their book gifting operation by building some new Book Huts in schools.
