The Hackney Pirates makes a transformative impact on the literacy, confidence and perseverance of young people who are both falling behind at school and have fewer advantages in their personal circumstances so that they can achieve both at school and in the world beyond.

Through engaging and high-quality after-school learning opportunities, we work to help young people catch up and develop their skills. We do this by giving them extra personalised attention in an exciting, unconventional learning environment, and giving them the opportunity to work on creative published products alongside local professionals.

The young people attend our sessions for 2.5 hours each week after school for a full academic year. Sessions involve reading support – planned to both support an enjoyment of reading, and an improvement in reading skills – and working on our publishing projects, which provide opportunities for the development of writing skills, confidence, and perseverance.

On average, children who attend The Hackney Pirates make 52% faster than expected age-related progress in their reading levels. Our programme has a significant impact on the young people we work with and in June 2017 we were awarded the FSI Small Charity, Big Impact award.
